And if we have one in six children, even using their figure, that have brain damage, and we end up, there’s three hundred million Americans, and we end up with one in six of them having brain damage, that’s fifty million Americans, we’re not going to be the number one country in the world anymore.
From David Kirby:
American kids are in huge trouble. One in six has a learning disability. Asthma, diabetes, allergies and arthritis are ravaging their bodies in growing numbers. And little of this is due to "better diagnostics" or "greater awareness."
From JB Handley (Abmd, October 22, 2004):
1 in 6. 1 in 6. 1 in 6.
1 in 6 of our children are suffering from Autism, Aspergers, PDD-NOS, ADD, ADHD, Asthma, deadly food allergies, or a learning disability. 1 in 6. 2 million American children are on Ritalin. 2 million. Autism rates have jumped 80-fold in 15 years. 80-fold!!! (from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 125).
Guys, at the very least get your story straight.
JB Handley adds:
How can this be true?
It's not, particularly when you keep using that incorrect and unsourced 1 in 10,000 figure in your website, and you keep comparing apples and oranges.
I don't doubt there is a CDC statistic about 1 in 6 children having something. But how about being careful about paraphrasing it? If you're trying to make an argument with that stat, I would think it's important to get that right.
I'll tell you what's true. About 1 in 6 of all persons fall below the 16.67-percentile in every normally distributed human capability. Maybe if you whine more, that will change.

Considering the number of Americans who drink, smoke and use recreational drugs, never mind rates of obesity I am surprised the number with brain damage is that low.
They do specify children, however. And I doubt they have real stats on brain damage.
Been thinking, considering the number of toxins in the average cigarette, how many of the mercurians are smokers I wonder, and if they are had they better not be chelating all that nastiness out of themselves?
Considering the number of UK residents who drink, smoke and recreational drugs, never mind the rates of obesity... :-) What about all that greasy fish and chips, and beer! No telling what they put in their "tea."
No wonder they are suffering from a tidal wave of train spotters....
I'd estimate that at least 5 in 6 of our children experience significant social prejudice of one sort or another, when you add up all the females, the racial minorities, the religious minorities, those with disabilities, those who speak with ethnic accents, etc.
A tragedy, indeed.
And if (when) the mercury conspiracists and other assorted bigots whine more, it's only going to get worse.
No, no, no... they are taking basic statistics and warping it beyond what is resonable.
The 1 in 6 refers to the 16% of children who fall below the one deviation of the norm in a normal distribution of a bell curve. Of course this does not mean any anything unless you know what was being tested!!!
My son received special ed. services when he fell below one standard deviation in at least two tests... And when he was three years old that meant producing speech (over 2 standard deviations), gross motor skills (barely one standard deviation... but that turned out to be false because he had just released from the hospital due to croup the day before), fine motor skills (within the norm), and something else having to do with language (sorry, it was over 15 years ago and I am not going to dig up the documents!). So he received services, and he is not even autistic.

HCN: "Of course this does not mean any anything unless you know what was being tested!!!"
Exactly.
And how the score was got has to be factored into it too.
I found a study from the 20s which I might post about sometime. They survey the whole population of children in a city and find I think about 60% have some health or mental problem. About 6% score below 80 in a Binet IQ test (which I think is what would be expected).
Snarky comment: Any guesses how many standard deviations and on which side of the norm of a normal distribution that John Best and Common Sue would be located?
HCN: "Any guesses how many standard deviations and on which side of the norm of a normal distribution that John Best and Common Sue would be located?"
Well...
Dunno about Common Stupidity herself, but as for JBJr... I filled in an Adorno F-scale on his behalf, using the material he has put out there for everyone to see of his attitudes and his personality (purely as a research exercise... NOT!*) and found that his score was rather high... 5.6! Maximum is 6.
Best's a fascist who can't abide white lint on his black shirts... but then... we all knew that, right?!
* Actually, I wanted to find out how different me and that imbecile are, because my score was 1.
